I was listening to a podcast today. It was from Magic Lessons, with Elizabeth Gilbert. If you haven't discovered her yet, I highly recommend you spend some time checking out her work and getting to know her. She is fantastic. I love that she has a heart for encouraging other people to explore their creative side. She truly believes there is room in the world for all of us and our uniquely creative spirit. She was interviewing Glennon Doyle Melton, another wonderful spirit, and they were discussing the necessity for us to be honest with ourselves and to present ourselves authentically to the world. Since "authentic" is one of the words I am focusing on this year, it deeply resonated with me.
Glennon said she gets up every morning, and commits herself to telling the truth about how she's feeling and what's going on in her world today. Not the petty stuff, the kind of thing you so often see on social media, but the bare reality of her life. She made the comment that shame lives in what we don't share, what we keep hidden. Shame is like bacteria. It needs the dark to breed. If you share it with the world and show it the light, it can't survive. Take your shame out of the dark and watch it shrivel and die, leaving you filled with the light.
I was spellbound by their conversation. It made me think about what I could be sharing with you, and made me wonder what you need to share with the world, or maybe just with your world. We all deserve to create lives we love to live, but in order to do that, we have to be authentic. We have to tell our truth, as it is that day. The desire I have to tell my truth is the reason for the title of this blog. I want to be truthful about my reality. I want you to know, in your very cells, that every life is both beautiful and messy, and when we try to only show the "perfect" side of our life, we add to the (harmful) illusion that only perfection is beautiful. I want us to help each other embrace the reality of our own lives, and see how the loveliness of it, in its authenticity, illuminates the universe.
I want you to know that every moment of your life is beautiful. Even the mess is beautiful, because the mess is where the journey happens. It's where the growth happens. It's where beginnings are born. It's where epiphanies are made. It's scary as hell, and it's gorgeous. It's also a lifetime process. You don't just go through one tough phase, and then you're done and it all becomes easy. Life has a way of continuing to throw crap at you. Sometimes you are wading through multiple messes at the same time. Beyond that, nobody figures this out right away. Figuring yourself out, and what kind of life you want, takes a long time. So if you don't know who your authentic self is yet, or if you're afraid to introduce her to the world, you are not alone. It's a very big club. And I'm right there with you. It's why I picked "authentic" as a guiding word this year, and I suspect for many years to come. It's time for us to engage in some truth-telling. In 2017, I am committing myself to getting up every morning and telling the truth about how I'm feeling that day, and what's really going on in my world. Will you join me?
I am so glad you are here! Welcome to my blog. This is your space, too. My name is Amy, and I am no stranger to the ups and downs of life. Join me as we search for beauty, authenticity, tell our truth, and hold space for each other in the messiness of life.
